Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship

Merit-based Scholarship

Purpose

To promote academic achievement and to reward exceptional high school students who show promise of continued excellence by providing scholarship funds for study at the college level.

Eligibility

  1. Demonstrate outstanding high school academic achievement;
  2. Be a legal resident of Georgia;
  3. Be a U.S. citizen, or a permanent resident who meets residency requirements, or national of the U.S. or have evidence from INS of eligible permanent resident alien status;
  4. Submit application materials including all documentation on or before February 1 of the same academic year as high school completion;
  5. Graduate from a public or private high school or receive the GED in the same year as application for the scholarship;
  6. Must have applied or been accepted at an eligible institution of higher education for full-time status.

Value

Approximately 200 awards are made annually to entering college freshmen. The maximum award amount is $1,500 per academic year. The scholarship can be renewed for an additional three years of undergraduate study.

Application Procedure

  1. Applications may be obtained from the high school counselor's office in December of the same academic year as high school completion.
  2. A student must be nominated by the high school he or she is attending to be considered for the award.
  3. Completed applications are submitted to the Georgia Department of Education (GDOE) by February 1 of the same academic year of high school completion.
  4. Eligible students will receive notification from the GDOE usually by July.
  5. Eligible students should complete the application process online using GSFAPPS.

Other Information

This scholarship program is federally funded and does not restrict recipients to attending a college or university in Georgia.
