Northeast Georgia Health Systems Nurse ProgramThe Northeast Georgia Health System Service Cancelable Loan program addresses the critical shortage of Registered Nurses (RN), particularly in northeast Georgia. The program is sponsored by the Northeast Georgia Health System, Inc., a health-care provider headquartered in Gainesville, in partnership with North Georgia College & State University, Brenau University, Piedmont College, and the Augusta Campus of the Medical College of Georgia. ValueStudents who enroll in the program are eligible for loans ranging from a minimum of $200 per academic year to a maximum of $2,500 for freshman, $3,500 for sophomores, $4,000 for juniors, and $4,500 for seniors. The Georgia Student Finance Authority (GSFA) determines the exact loan amount that each student is eligible to receive. To view the current Stafford Loan interest rates, please click here. Origination and federal default fees are set by federal statute and are deducted from loan proceeds. The origination fee is currently 1.5% and the federal default fee is 1%.
Eligibility RequirementsYou must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have the results sent to the financial aid offices of the schools to which you are applying for admission and financial assistance. Each financial aid office will then determine if you are eligible to apply for a service cancelable loan in the Northeast Georgia Health Systems Nurse Program. If you are, the recommendation and loan amount are included in your financial aid award package. Other eligibility criteria is as follows:
Service CommitmentStudents who become RNs after successfully completing the program and passing the licensing exam can repay through service, all or part of their loan debt by working full-time for the Northeast Georgia Health System for a specified length of time. The loan may be cancelled on the basis of one calendar year (12) month's full-time employment of at least 36 hours a week for each academic year of assistance received. The nurses receive their full salary in addition to canceling their loan debt. Graduates who do not fulfill the service obligation must repay their loans, plus interest, where applicable. Application ProcedureIndividuals interested in participating in this program should contact the financial aid office at the appropriate school (North Georgia College & State University, Brenau University, Piedmont College, or the Augusta Campus of the Medical College of Georgia). The school and the Northeast Georgia Health System Service will determine eligibility. Once you decide which school you wish to attend and accept its offer of financial assistance, the school can certify you as eligible for a Stafford Loan with the service option based on the amount they are allocated June 1 of each year. To complete the loan process, follow the directions from your school. Loan DisbursementsOnce your loan is guaranteed, the proceeds from your Federal Stafford Loan with The Service Option will be sent to your school. You must contact the Financial Aid Office to make arrangements to receive your loan proceeds. You will receive a Loan Guarantee and Disclosure Statement outlining the anticipated disbursement schedule, as determined by your school, for each loan guaranteed. You will also receive a Service Loan Contract, which details the service loan information and repayment information.
